How do our young people come to know who they are in a ‘be true to yourself world’? What does it mean for them to grow up with an identity that is beautifully bestowed on them as opposed to finding and expressing their own image and identity as cultivated by the pervasive ideologies and philosophies from the world around them? This seminar will explore this and more for parents, grandparents and all those who serve with kid’s and young people in the local church.
Paul says ‘train yourself to be godly’ (1 Timothy 4:7). The implications of the athletic metaphor are intriguing and significant. They point to the ‘spiritual disciplines’ ??” a relatively neglected area in which many of us need help. We will be thinking about the training routines (prayer, worship, bible reading, fasting etc) that help us to grow spiritually. Expect more practice than theory.
In this second seminar, we will be looking at a different dimension of the discipline that is needed for growth in godliness ??” the development of ‘Repeated inner gospel-driven choices’. The session will be highly practical, aiming at equipping us to train our inner life with the gospel. Attendance at the first seminar is not necessary to benefit from this session.
In several places in the Psalms, the author addresses himself, e.g. ‘Praise the Lord, my soul.’ We will be looking at this ancient biblical practice and seeing how helpful it is in addressing dryness in worship, depression, feeling distant from God and inner restlessness.
