Far from being magnetic and appealing to society today, Christianity and the Christian church seem de-magnetised: an irrelevant, and even repellent presence. We’ll explore what to make of this in light of what the Bible tells us about our humanity in the image of its Creator and built for worship.
As followers of Jesus Christ, the Christian church is to be a people to whom others are drawn as we point them to Him and are drawn into him, into his reality, into his likeness, into his Body. In this final session we’ll explore how we might do this so we’re fully magnetized to proclaim the reality of his magnetic kingdom.
Defeaters are those well-known ‘stumbling block’ beliefs that stop people considering seriously the claims of Christ. In this final session we will look at the best ways to tackle these head on.
All God’s image bearers ask the same questions: what’s my place in the universe? Is there a plan? Am I really in control or being controlled? Can I be delivered from the mess of life? These are ‘magnetic points’ expressed in the hopes, fears and dreams of the cultural stories we tell ourselves. We can use these to point to Jesus, but first we need to see how left to ourselves they lead us to wrong and idolatrous answers that will inevitably destroy us. We’ll explore both questions and answers using contemporary examples.
The gospel is good news because only Jesus Christ is able to give us true and satisfying answers to our ‘magnetic points’. In providing answers though, Jesus turns the tables by asking us questions that demand a response. In our third session, we’ll explore the gospel’s subversive and fulfilling power.
We might be prepared and ready to give a gospel outline…but no-one ever asks us! In this second session we will explore how we intentionally relate and communicate the good news of Jesus to the real lives and cultures of those who never think about him.
Everything that humans say and do and make tells us something about their view of the world, their commitments and their gods. In this first session we will explore what the Bible says about culture and its relationship to the pervasive biblical theme of idolatry.
Knowing the right time to ask a question, to give a response, or to just listen, can give us great opportunities to proclaim Jesus to our non-Christian family and friends. In this third session we will look at some tools and tactics to bring the gospel into our everyday conversations.
