So how do we do follow Jesus in a world where there are lots of serious demands on our time and commitment? What happens if people, even people we love, are against us living for Jesus? Jesus shows how a close relationship with him is the way to live a meaningful and productive life of love and joy that honours him and benefits those around us.
For most international students a UK degree means that, when we go home, we will be leaders in our community, family, work or business. What does it mean to be a leader? Leadership styles differ a lot across the world, but Jesus’ example of true leadership is not just an inspiring model for us, it is also a picture to help us understand what his death on the cross means.
Following Jesus means doing what he did and taught, and that means obeying him, which is not easy. At the moment we may be surrounded by Christian friends and have more free time, but faced with life back home, work pressure and family life, obeying Jesus may seem almost impossible. The good news is we are not expected to do it on our own. In Jesus’ teaching here he explains about the Holy Spirit, God’s power working in the lives of all those who believe in him.
Why do Christians claim Jesus is the only way to God? How do we understand how important Jesus is in a world where there seem to be many gods, religions and philosophies? But Jesus actually shows God to us – and brings us to God because he is God. And he reassures his followers that they are not alone, and they will never be alone, no matter where we go – now or in the next life.
What do Christians believe about ghosts and spirits? Do the other gods people worship have any real power? What should I do about my family’s strong belief in ancestor worship? How do Christians deal with these issues? In many cultures gods, ghosts, spirits and ancestors are part of everyday life. In the West these things are rarely talked about, so international students may not always find answers to these kinds of questions in British churches. But the Bible does give answers and there are ways we can understand these things from a Christian perspective. This seminar will look at Jesus’ position and power in the spiritual world, how the Bible views these different parts of the ‘unseen world’ and how we can live a Christian life which honours our family and traditions with freedom from fear.
